Pre Match Review - 21st March 2010
Trips up the coast are always great days out and are always, without exception very hard games.
The hospitality given by the Millom club is second to none in our league and we are always assured of a warm welcome.
On what will be another busy day Millom too are mopping up fixtures from the older age groups a lot like Walney last week and there will be games happening simultaneously around the club (I'm tipped off that you should get in for your bacon bun early).
The 8s will start proceedings again with a 10:30am kick off (meet at Millom 10am or depart club in convoy at 9:30am) and we'll be looking to build on last week's brilliant performance against Walney and also to welcome back the old heads of Ethan, Macca and Adam.
The parents who witnessed last season's fixtures will probably tell you that our kids were a little shell shocked in the first half by the venom with which Millom play.
They have the size and confidence to run through defenders and we'll need to be at our best for what will be a defensive challenge.
I have no doubt that Jason's input at training is paying dividends with brave straight running, good positioning and a few great passes here and there but we'll need to stop the runners this week and will certainly need to put our tackling boots on. Sunday will be about the kids challenging themselves in the tackle and using their confidence to take every attacking opportunity and get as near to the try line as they can.
After last week's sub-a-thon I asked Millom whether it would be possible to play two games at Under 10s.
Whilst they have 16 players it's just not enough to facilitate two games and they've suggested we play three periods.
We're going to take this opportunity to put a static set of kids out out for a full 20 minute period initially followed by two halves with a core squad of 11 and some substitutions where needed.
I'd ask that all the kids get wrapped up accordingly as there may be an element of waiting to get on.
The 10s game will kick off at 11:15 (meet at 10:45am or depart club in convoy at 9:30am).
The cough/colds/virus that seems to be hitting us very hard will hopefully have gone and we'll be back to our normal standard with cohesive defence, straight and brave running followed by supporting the runner and passing the ball through hands to find a gap.
One thing's for certain, if we defend like we did last week we'll be sent back down the A595 with a good hiding. We need to play as a team and maintain our width throughout. I'm sure it was an off day at Walney and we can bounce straight back.
Millom's ground can be found by entering the town, passing the school on the left, turning left at the T junction (garage on right), follow the road through residential area and club is on your right.
