MATCH PREVIEW
Walney have what is probably the biggest squad of 8s in our league which is a great sign for the future of their club. They also have good coaching pedigree with some famous local rugby names in their ranks. Our 8s will need to continue where they left the second half against Roose and continue to grow as a team. You can’t teach the confidence to put yourself in the way of someone running at you as fast as they can. This only comes with game time and tackling technique training so where we realise that our defence could improve we’re very keen to promote the confidence to run with the ball and pass to our team mates as a priority. In Ethan and Spencer we have two talented individuals who can run tries in all day long and are equally happy tackling anything. We need to support players like these two and those straight, brave runners like Macca, Adam, Steph and Sprinkler. They’ve shown that they can pass – they just need someone to pass to. Training will be all about positioning at the play the ball this week as bunching together is the cardinal sin of Under 8s!
Walney’s Under 8s of last season had in my opinion the best defence in the league (and some very handy attackers.) They also had the numbers to change the whole team at half time. Those 8s are now 10s and Sunday will be a different game altogether. I don’t envisage any changes to our approach. The team are mature enough now to know when to play a safety set (ask your child) and when to throw it about. They set the bar very high last week so let’s hope we see the same again this week with a coherent defensive line and the skills to pass the ball left to right and back again if this doesn’t work. We hope to welcome back Jacob, Singo and Kian to the team this week which can only add to the skills and experience we have on show. If we’re being honest Dean and I are still grinning from last week’s performance. In the four years since I started coaching it was the best display of rugby league I had seen. More champagne rugby this week please! Please let me know if you’re child isn’t available as soon as you can.
Jai Cooper has kindly offered to collate the statistics for us so a big thanks to her and a big thanks to Graham Benson for the fantastic photos last week.
Walney’s ground is on Mill Lane. Park in front of the library/doctor’s and follow the cutting to the left. 8s meet at 10am, 10s meet at 1030am. If anyone needs transport please let me know.
