Walney Review
HAWCOAT STORM RL 4 v WALNEY CENTRAL 5
Walney requested that we switched the fixture from Sunday away to Friday at home due to a football tournament.
Walney turned up with 22 kids which suggests soccer is very popular on the island!
The first half display was good from both teams and Storm went in at half time with a slender 4-2 lead thanks to tries from Jake (2) and Lewis (2).
Walney then switched the entire team at half time and clawed back to a well deserved 5-4 victory.
Walney’s defence in the second half was without doubt the best we’ve come up against all season.
We never looked like scoring for the second twenty minutes as Walney continuously moved off the line to swamp our would be attackers.
It’s an easy game to play and we need to use the Walney kids as an example of this.
No frills, solid defence with some tries from the faster kids is an excellent game plan and unfortunately we continue to be caught out by our inability to get back to the line and move off it again.
The fact that we had already played a hard twenty minutes in the heat was also a factor as was the absence of Archie and LJ but all credit to the visitors and Paul their coach for a massively improved performance since we last met.
Unfortunately the 10s were unable to arrange a corresponding fixture.
Football Tournament Review
HAWCOAT STORM NIL FC
After peeking early with a narrow 0-1 defeat we entered a downhill spiral which, had we been a football team would have meant crying kids, screaming parents and balling coaches. As such we burst into an impromptu “we suck at football” chant during the medal ceremony! We approached the tournament as we should have and came out of it as a better team. Despite the results every team we played from the locals to those from Middlesbrough, Preston and St Bees commented on how much we enjoyed our day and what a great bunch we had – I’m sure you’ll all agree. Thank the Lord you chose rugby!
I still have monies outstanding for Wigan. If this is you please get in touch immediately as I won’t use club money for tickets.
