Under 8s
Had you told me I'd have been giving a congratulatory speech after that game I'd have said you were having a laugh!
The defensive weaknesses that let us down against Ulverston have been fixed.
We moved off the line as a unit and prevented Marsh Hornets from scoring - it's that easy.
We supported the runner and even though we're not passing yet the runner has options with supporting players and the pass is the next step.
Marsh Hornets find themselves in a very similar situation to us having lost a lot of their experienced Under 8s to the Under 10s this season.
The fact that we can be sporting enough to go easy on their new, smaller kids speaks volumes not only for our team but for our sport in general. Well done everyone. The running is beginning to straighten up a bit and some probing runs from Sam, Harvey and William made us the yards.
These runs are in no way glamorous but they set the platform for our next attack and position and possesion are key.
The tries will come but be sure that any yard gained is an advantage to our team.
Tries galore from Archie (4), Lewis (3) and Jake (1) made the final score 34 - 20 with a dubious try from the little guy flattering the visitors!
Kian, LJ and Marcus all showed a massive improvements defensively and worked well together to even stop Gigantor from bursting through on several occasions.
As we currently have the bare 9 our walking wounded deserve a special mention today.
Kian played through with a rubbing boot and Sam carried on after a smack on the beak.
All character building stuff and great signs for the future.
We do have some younger kids knocking on the door now and as we approach the season proper will be looking to swell our ranks by another two or three to enable some of the players to have a well earned breather.
The 10s showed glimmers of where they will be in the next couple of months with some fantastic efforts from everyone involved. Strong running from Jacob, Charlie and Rory saw a well organised Marsh Hornets defence tested and some fine individual jinking runs from Matty, William and Austin, the latter scoring twice as a result of good support play, ensured that The Storm weren't camped out in their own half.
Defensively there were big games from James, Oliver and Jonah all of whom are growing in confidence as they get game time under their belts.
Tom's debut was a very encouraging one and Harvey led by example by ploughing up the middle against bigger players.
Our weaknesses are easily fixed but will require the boys to be drilled into moving off the line when defending.
Standing still at the play the ball allows the attackers to build up speed and also utilise options wide of their position with a pass.
We need to fix this as a priority.
We also suffered from Marsh Hornets effective use of the marker at the play the ball.
Every 3 of our 6 attempts were snuffed out by the opposition's marker taking our man, we also need to fix this and to start doing the same to our opposition.
A final score of 10 – 38 was respectable for our second game but by applying these simple fixes we will stop the leaks and narrow the differences.
A special thanks to our kitchen helpers who generously gave up their time to provide the delicious and nutircious hot dogs and drinks. As a first run through for matchdays we coped very well and made £44 profit into the bargain.
The tidying took a little longer than expected so any help here would be greatly appreciated. As a rule, if the 10s parents can cover whilst the 8s play and vice versa we have everything covered and I'd much rather have too many than too few.
Please see Mrs B if you can help.
