UNDER 10S RESULT
HAWCOAT STORM - NOT AS MANY vs. ULVERSTON - MORE THAN US
No individual mentions today. What I did see was a very good team effort. I did tell you before Christmas that some of the teams were big and Ulverston certainly didn't disappoint! When there is such disparity in sizes then physics dictates the bigger team will win and this was the case today. As an exercise in "how to become a rugby team in 12 easy steps" I would personally say we're at about 4 at the moment. Glimmers of brilliance, grunting tackles, offloads and passing to team mates - all encouraging stuff. It may be hard as a spectator and it may be frustrating for some but I personally am very excited by what I saw today. I know we'll improve week on week and as the boys challenge themselves and grow in confidence and character week on week then the results will come. It was great to see 11 smiling faces at the full time whistle of the 10s, none of which had a clue what the score was. This is exactly where we need to be, playing for fun and not taking ourselves too seriously. However, I am fast approaching 37 and can't be expected to sprint the length of the pitch as I approach the autumn of my days! Please try and stop these length of the pitch tries if you can, my legs aren't what they used to be.
UNDER 8S RESULT
HAWCOAT STORM - QUITE A FEW vs. ULVERSTON - ONE MORE
A great display by the 8s who, like the 10s are starting to look like a Rugby League team. To lose our first league game by one try against a vastly experienced side is a great result for the boys. Admittedly we were a little thin on the ground due to illness and prior arrangements but the 8 that took the field did Hawcoat Storm proud today. A true display of team work saw us doubling up in the tackles and passing the ball. Some persistent high tackling could have resulted in retaliation but it didn't - another very good sign. Ulverston are the biggest Under 8s team we will face this season and we matched them in every department but one. Ulverston had the luxury of substitutes and we played with a man short. Could I please ask the parents of those kids in years 2 and 3 to give us a mention to some of their friends who may have a son or daughter that would like to join Hawcoat Storm. They will be given a warm welcome as your child has and we'll turn them into team players with the confidence to challenge themselves not only on the pitch but in their everyday lives as well. There is a recruitment poster available on the website if you wish to use this.
Thanks again to those who gave up their time to help today. The bacon buns were a roaring success and the kitchen looked like a hive of activity.
