Post Match Review - 12th June 2009

UNDER 8S WON 40 - 20

A brilliant team display saw everyone involved in a win that was hard earned against an Askam outfit that proved to be well organised and as mature as us when it came to keeping the ball alive.

This made for a great spectacle for the watching parents and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.

We matched them in tenacity and determination and had a slight edge over them in defence.

DEFENCE WINS GAMES is a mantra often heard and it was certainly true in a performance that saw our young gladiators defend three successive sets of 6 on their own line only to thwart the would be attack and score at the other end of the pitch.

Captain for the day Kian led by example with some great determined runs and scores from Archie (2), Jake (2), Lewis (4), Sam (1) and Ethan (1) ensured we got the result on a wonderful night of rugby.

UNDER 10S LOST 6-0

I could start the same way here....A brilliant team display saw everyone involved in a win that was hard earned against an Askam outfit that proved to be well organised and as mature as us when it came to keeping the ball alive.

The only difference being the hard earned bit.

As a team we are demonstrating the skills we need to compete.

This is down to Dean and Jason's hard work at training and the boys have responded well to this and now show that as far as actually playing the game is concerned they can do the business.

Catch, carry, pass, tackle, kick / chase and play the balls are all of a standard expected at their age group.

What is missing now is the drive, venom, determination, intensity, physical impact, fearlessness and the channeled aggression that makes the teams we come up against more superior on the field. The boys spend all week at school being told not to push or shout or to use their physical size to overcome others. On the pitch we need to see the exact opposite and I personally feel that we're currently suffering as a direct consequence of having such nice kids at the club. I propose to talk to them at training this week and to try and instill the mind set that it took Petch a bloody nose and Oliver a minor scuffle to achieve (and then to run right through the opposition with little care other than to progress the ball). Job done!

This is where you as parents and carers also come in. From experience I can state that my boy was quite shocked and disturbed at what his Dad was asking him to do in the name of rugby! If you can help us by explaining that we need this approach to match our opposition and that it's acceptable to do so in a controlled manner on the sports field then they will hopefully feel that they have your permission to act a little differently than their little angel normally does!
