Despite only being able to field 8 kids, those that played turned in a superb performance against a Marsh Hornets side that never let their heads go down and played well until the final whistle. It was apparent that we had taken the last few weeks training into the game today. Defence wins games and ours was fantastic and unrecognisable from June’s stuttering attempts. I was very proud of all of the players today and the way in which they didn’t lose their heads after scoring try after try. They all did their jobs in a sporting manner and running in 11 tries to zero was just reward. Will scored a great first try this season and the joy on his and his team mate’s faces is what makes it all worthwhile. In attack we all stood back, we all ran on to the quality balls from acting half back and we all passed and passed some more, brilliant stuff. Credit to what was a very young Hornets side for the way they defended for the full thirty minutes and also for going easy on Bob. 11-0 from what was without doubt our best game of the season. Tries for Ethan (3), Spencer (3), Jude (2), Will (1) and LJ (2) show just what a team performance it was.
The 10s followed just as the heavens opened with the slippiest ball we had in the cupboard. Both teams coped well with the conditions and tried their best to play passing rugby in the wet and windy weather. The forwards all did their jobs well in attack and defence and the backs complimented their play with some determined play. Special mentions for Jacob who ran in ball after ball and Harvey who worked tirelessly at marker with some stubborn tackling preventing Marsh Hornets plays at the ruck. Credit to the whole team for a much improved defensive display that thwarted a very talented attacking team. We still need to be aware of where we are in the set of 6 and ready ourselves for a kick/chase or the scoot but all the signs are good and the improvements are obvious. The final score of 5-3 was a respectable one and despite the rain it was a magnificent game to watch. Tries for Will, Hugh and Wazza made up our three.
I’m trying to rearrange Sunday’s home fixture against Askam for Friday evening due to the Summer Ball commitments of 22 of our parents. Hopefully this will clash with a football match.
