Another brilliant evening for summer rugby on the always excellent 1st XV pitch was on the cards and the kids didn’t disappoint. Then 7s started us off with Bob at the helm and they demonstrated just how far they’ve come in half a season with some passing and running and tackling that proves the kids are mastering the fundamentals well. More or less the same team then entered the fray for the Under 8s fixture, complimented by the Big Guns! Walney’s 8s were fresh and extremely well drilled and the final result reflected just how good they were. As a team we continued to drive the ball again and again with little gain in field position but this will all prove beneficial in the long term. We started with our strongest possible 10s team on the night and for the first 15 minutes gave a very experienced and talented Walney team a real run for their money. Following the half time break we changed personnel and the leakiness began. When playing at 10s flailing your arms about just won’t cut it in defence and we paid the price for some “unorthodox” tackling methods that are neither effective or indeed any part of any training session we have ever had. Individuals must start to challenge themselves in these 1 on 1 situations and we’ll continue to encourage them to do this. In phases you can see the skills that the kids are developing and in the 10s arena this is exactly the place to do it. The kick through on the 5th tackle, the set moves, the use of a pivot at the ruck and the natural selection of forwards and backs are all forming part of our 10s game now in preparation for September when we begin to play to win at Under 12s.
Millom at home next Sunday means we need to use this experience and start to prepare now!
BBQ
Many many thanks to those who helped, those who bought, those who baked cakes and those that helped the bar takings beat the Friday night record held since 1975! We made around £70 profit on the night and I’m sure everyone enjoyed it. Thank you again.
MERCHANDISE ORDERS
I sent out an electronic version of the form but if anyone wants a hard copy please ask. Orders are payable by cheque to HAWCOAT STORM MINI RUGBY LEAGUE please by Fri 18th June.
WORLD CUP
As football fever will grab us for at least the next week and a half (I’ve always been an England pessimist) it’s important that as we will undoubtedly see blatant cheating through faking injury that you explain to the kids that this is unacceptable behaviour and will certainly lead to a mouthful of grass as a minimum. There’s nothing worse as a coach on the pitch than seeing a child on the ground only to find he’s clutching his leg in order to have a rest. This is not part of our game. The other disturbing thing is referee and match official abuse in football. Again I would ask you to please explain that in Rugby we call the referee Sir, we never question a decision and we never ever behave in an unrespectful manner on the field of play. Any player doing any of these will be dismissed, no question.
