ST JUDES REVIEW
A fantastic day with a warm welcome from St Judes that continued through until leaving for the game. I’d like to extend a massive thank you to the St Judes club for organising the games, for feeding us and for generally giving us such a warm welcome. They epitomised the family friendly approach to rugby league and the reason we’re all involved in this great game. Hopefully we’ll welcome them to Hawcoat in September and we’ll return the favour.
UNDER 8s v WIGAN ST JUDES
A highly entertaining game against two very well matched teams provided a great spectacle for the watching parents of both teams. From the start it was played in a nice setting with both sets of supporters applauding each other’s efforts. The final score of 10 all (40-40) was reflective of the game and I’m sure that not only did the boys enjoy their run out but have also benefitted from the experience of playing outside the area. St Jude’s are a well established club with an enviable record of success in developing youngsters (Sean Long to name one) and I’m hoping that this could be the start of a healthy relationship between the clubs. Opening their accounts on the day were LJ and Marcus who have been so close so many times all season. Well done boys! A special mention must go to my boy here. I’m very wary of piling on too much praise simply because he’s mine but he tackled out of his skin and scored seven tries on Friday, took his personal tally to 54 tries for this season and passed the 200 points barrier (218) for this season. Outstanding! Spencer also bagged another try and some fantastic individual tackling from Kian, Declan and Adam kept us in the game. I’m very proud of all our 8s for a gutsy performance on unfamiliar ground.
UNDER 10s v WIGAN ST JUDES
I was hoping that the St Judes Under 14s also had a game and were warming up on the 10s pitch – I was wrong! From what I have seen on the video we gave them a game but the running patterns and organisation was that of a team that trains three times a week and we were no match for them in terms of size or experience. Where we did match them was in the team spirit department which resulted in a fantastic try from Charlie. This try was as a result of a big hit from Jacob and the capture of the spilt ball from Matty, a quick play the ball from Will to Petch who offloaded out the back door to Chaz to score and then convert wonderfully for 6 points. All good stuff and with the addition of some experienced players from the 8s next season we’ll be a force to be reckoned with. The way the boys carry on every week will pay dividends next year – trust me we’ve been here before!
WIGAN TRIP
Our kids, parents and coaching staff behaved impeccably from leaving the Strawberry to returning twelve hours later. You were a credit to yourselves, your parents and our club. I have extended an invitation to the St Judes club to visit us once the schools return in a return fixture. The experience of the stadium tour and big game atmosphere will no doubt have created some mini Wigan fans and we have the opportunity to attend a one day coaching camp with the Warriors community team at Hawcoat Park 9.00-1.00pm, on Friday 14th August, cost £15 or £35 including a free shirt.
